I have installed an Esab Power Compact 200 inductor in an old custom built mig welder.

It works "ok" in the center tapping but a bit choppy on full induction. I have seen in different wiring-diagrams that they have placed a resistor around the inductor (see R1 in the picture),
and I was wondering if the inductor will not work well without it.. Origo family of mig welders seem to have similar inductor setup.
Does anybody has any information about the resistor, and what it does, resistance value etc.. I was wondering if it would be possible to wind one myself.
I suppose it does not get that hot since it's not short circuiting ?
