Esab Eyetech slow response!

I have an Esab Eyetech helmet that used to be brilliant, but now it is not reacting quickly enough.

I have only started to use it again in the last couple of weeks after it has been left in the garage over the cold spell. Could this have damaged it?

The shade still darkens but it takes about a second or so. It’s ok if you close your eyes as you arc up but I want it back to how it used to be! The variable shade still works it is just the delay time.

Has anyone heard of this before? Do they contain a battery of any kind?

I don’t want to have to bin it as it is a good helmet apart from this problem.

I guess coldness damaged batteries ( if there are any, I guess there should be ).

Thats how mine started to die.
They do contain a battery, but its sealed in the lense. Try leaving it for a day somewhere warm and light, sometimes works.

If it's an Eyetech 1 then there's a post about batteries here. Probably best to put it in the window inside to warm up and charge up. Best to store them somewhere light - near a window perhaps.

Post 14 in this thread, show the insides of an original eytech, they can be repaired, the tricky bit is separating the lense body without destroying it.

Mines just in the process of dying in the same way. They look difficult to get apart, i'll get myself a new one when i have a minute.

I will try to replace the batteries before spending on a new one as I have found them for under £3 here (http://www.batteries4youdirect.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=74).

I really like the helmet and if I get a new one it will be a low cost option so would prefer to keep the quality. A typical branded manufacturer though, forcing you to buy a replacement for a £3 set of batteries!
