ESAB buddy 160 freeflow ?

anyone had problems with gas free flow on the 160 ?
I sent mine back to ESAB uk and they said that it free flows for 10 seconds after switching on but Im not sure. I have to twiddle the reg knob to get it to stop. Can anyone who has one confirm this ?

A good idea by esab to initially purge the tig hose when the machine is first turned on each day, but in reality after a full day in the workshop you'd probably turn the machine on maybe 10-20 times and wasting 10 seconds of argon that the esab designers dont have to pay for.

In production environments, welders only tend to get turned off at weekends, only then if the maint bloke on OT spots it!

Gotta agree there as when i was a full time fab/welder there was maybe 4-5 welders in the workshop that were left turned on most off the day,

there was a tig that had a noisy fan AND water-cooler,
that was turnon-weld-turnoff.

there is nothing re pre purge in the instruction book at all. Perhaps they assume that we all already have knowledge of this ? It is an entry level machine after all, so how would someone like myself know ?

I do pull the trigger and let the post flow run, if I haven't used the set for a while. But 10sec every time it's switched on is a bit much.

For the mist part TIG is still considered a Commercial machine and as others has said, it's likely to be turned on at the start of the day and off at the end, if it's lucky: somewhat defeating the object.

On the Kemmpi I have there is a GAS button that if pressed once will vent for 20secs I believe. Good for setting the LPM without zapping yourself with the HF

I think our two big Tig sets do this for probably around 10 seconds....a Miller and a Migatronic

Turn the welder on first, then the gas cylinder.....?

Are you saying the gas solenoid is sticking open and doesn't stop?
Or are you just saying that 10 seconds is too long?


Don't know about you lot, but its hard to pick up a torch without pressing the button anyway

Not on the button, but I do get sick of zapping in inside of my legs some days when sat at the bench, using the pedal

it doesn;t matter how a set the damn thing up, it always seems to be too sensitive
