Hey guys. Recently I've had great success with tig welding some stainless Hygenic fittings and pipe work with 100% argon backpurge - mostly thanks to advice from members of this forum - however the last few welds have left me baffled.
The argon flow at my torch is a stable 8 l/pm yet I've started to get what I think looks like an over cooked weld (only running at 37-40 amps) on 1.6mm fittings/tube. Furthermore, I'm trying to set the purge gas at around 3-4 l/pm but when testing the flow the flow meter peaks and troughs erratically, from 3-15 l/pm. I've checked for leaks and all is fine, and I'm taking a flow reading strait from the Argon hose from the regulator.
In my mind this will give me blow outs in the weld pool or give areas with poor gas coverage (on the penetration side of the weld) but shouldn't effect the exterior of the weld.
Can anyone shed any light on this? Can this happen with argon bottles? Is there a solution? Or could it be yet another faulty regulator? I've swapped over regulators before and the same this happens. Which kinda leads me to a gas bottle problem. My argon is supplied by adams gas in Kent.
