if i were to drive pizza to customers houses i would not work unless i was at the very least payed back for gas. in the welding industry how realistic is this expectation? i would expect my employer to supply me with any necessary tools for the job such as my wire or filler and gasses etc while i bring my own tools... if this is not normal practice in industry (********)... what do you think would happen if i told my employer i expect him to buy the supplies that will be used for HIS structure. would he find a new welder or buy the wire and gas and such?

By employer do you mean you're in fulltime employment or freelance?
In the UK an employer would supply all the gear and consumables, if stuff had to be bought in emergency by the employee (working away from base on site for example) the employer would reimburse the employee in full, or even provide a company debit/credit card.
A freelancer would be considered to be self-employed and if he supplied all the gear the cost of that would be reflected in the cost of the job and invoiced accordingly. If the customer sipplied the gear (maybe specialised stuff) then the freelancer wouldn't invoice for it.

As RTB says, if you are contracted to do a job on site then it's up to you to have the necessary equipment and supplies to do that job and you should factor in the cost of the consumables when you quote on the job.
If you are employed by a company then I would expect them to provide all the equipment and consumables unless, as RTB says, you are freelance in which case, again, you should factor that into the hourly rate you charge them for your services.

anyone from the USA have any input? and by employer i meant either of the circumstances you both mentioned. i wouldnt be surprised at all if they required you to buy all consumables with no reimbursement. see here in america its all about ****ing your employees up their ass and milking them for all theyre worth. i went to a sandwich shop and saw a little box at the checkout counter that says "for the crew's gas" i was so offended. not only are these scum bag capitalists not paying for the gas of their employees runs... but theyre taking their tips as gas money! ****ed up.

What are they paying you? Is it a living wage after all your expenses and material costs have been taken into consideration? Only you can know this and whether the employment is worth taking up in first place.
