epdm roof with bitumen flashing tape?

just put on a new epdm roof on the shed that butts up to another felt roof

does anyone know if i could use regular diy store bitumen type flashing tape over the join , im happy it would do what i need but will it effect the rubber at all

the proper epdm flashing is over 3x as expensive and i cant really stretch to that if i can help it

if no one knows the answer with certainty its better to buy the right stuff then waste the cash you have already spent

If I'd gone to the expense of epdm for the roof I would use the proper stuff for the job. If the cheap flashing is the self adhesive type it doesn't last that well especially in direct sun.

you will damage the epdm, get the proper flashing.

yes the cheap stuff will last for a bit but you will have to do it again so why bother?

well id planned to eventualy re roof the ajoining one when i can afford it in a couple of years or whatever with the epdm...then do whatever i have to do to make a proper in the stuff

I have a semi with dormer roof. Neighbour had their roof done with EDPM and to seal against out felt roof there was simply a metal strip screwed down with sealant around the edges.
I had our roof done at a later date with fibreglass (well recommended and wouldn't consider anything else now) and installers had no problem bonding to the EDPM.
BTW neighbours are having problem with their roof. Wind is getting under the EDPM sheet from wall cavity or loft area and making it balloon up then snapping back so ensure yours is bonded to the whole roof and not just around the edges.

im bonding the whole lot down to fresh osb

if im honest i dont expect it to last years and years but if it can beat felt then im happy as it was only a little bit more money , i cant be spending ££££ on a shed roof

are you saying your guys roared the fibre glass over the epdm where it joins?

If EDPM bonded to whole surface then no reason why it won't last 20 years ! I bought a couple of rolls to do my roof years ago but ended up hot felting instead due to the potential problem with neighbour having different surface. The guarantee on the rolls was something like 10 years with expected life of over 20 years. Not cheap though - £150 a roll !
Illness meant my capabilities are now limited hence having the roof fibreglassed. Other neighbours had same firm and recommended them. No idea how they made the join between the fibreglass and EDPM but I had roof pitch changed to opposite direction (it used to drain back to the tiles but now goes to edge and into guttering) so that made it easier for them.
