Anyone know much about electric parking brakes looking at fitting one to my bug as fitting a bench seat so going to have to place it somewhere

I assume they just work of reversing the current for on and off ??? And seems the best option or going for a umbrella type like in early hilux

Busy building a hot rod, I have an extra pedal for a foot operated "handbrake"--- off a mercedes. same problem as you, bench seat, and narrow Cab. Hand operated release lever -- same as the mercs.

have looked at them but worried it's going to get in the way I know loads off old jap stuff had them even the early fords layland etc but there like hens teeth now it seems

Before the silly foot operated job MB used to use an umbrella style for RHD models which was waaaaaaaaaay better, especially with a manual g/box, and takes up less room. The modified vehicles i worked on, replaced the stock handbrake, with a small linear rod motor, through a bell crank. All you had in the cab was a switch.

There's a bit of circuitry to go with EPB, you have to have some means of stopping the caliper piston once the brake is on, usually done by sensing motor current to pick up on when it has stalled. Likewise for the slackening off function.

Is that built in to the motor setup or is it run by the main ecu do you know ??

The other way I thought about was using a actuator like on windows/doors but not sure on the mot law as know your not allowed hydro handbrake but I suppose that's due to pressure failure[/QUOTE]

Mazda pick ups used the umbrella handle type handbrake, much nicer to use than the mercedes type.

Don't do it, EPBs are hateful things, find a way to fit a proper handbrake.

just park it in gear thats what you have to do with everything that has an EPB as std,
as they dont work very well for long

I pretty sure you can have a hydrualic hand brake. I has to act apon all wheels on the axle, and has to be separate from the braking circuits. (Something a lot of home brew trikes don't)
