Seriously you think it needs worrying about? 80 or 90, or 80w90 is going to be all the same to a quad bike diff.
I had a workmate who had a previous job working at a (well known) lubricants supplier back in the 1990's and he told me that the EP80 and EP90 bottles were filled from the same vat.

The EP80W/90 is a multigrade to attain the same properties over a larger temperature range. The EP80 is single grade. For what you want there really is no difference. If anything the multigrade is better than single grade.

Yes extreme pressure as encountered between the flanks of mating gears, in gearboxes and diffs etc. It is more viscous so sticks to the face to resist metal to metal contact.

I think I'm right in saying EP is only a requirement in hypoid drives as thy are a lot harder on the oil. So far as I know a diff having the input and crown gears on the same level don't need the EP rating, though I've never found a gear oil to not be EP rated. Will have to dig out my college notes one day.

I,m sure that the EP is a high pressure anti-stick/weld because the contact points are so small,pressure is very high, the EP additive used to be sulphur, same as we used to have in diesel to help to lubricate the injector pump internals.

thanks for that and to the other gents who replied, when I had a motoguzzi shaft drive bike EP Hypoid 90 was specified for the shaft drive so the hypoid bit was specifically mentioned. I'm a bit obsessive when it comes to putting in the right oil
(as specified by the machine manufacturer) always think of it as the machines life blood,( not the brand of oil specified I mean but the numbers).AndyStobbs

Well it fails prematurely at least you can't recriminate yourself if you put the right oil in, where possible. That's my attitude but I do think its quite arbitrary in a lot of things.

Nothing like that, the add pack has solid lubricants which form a protective film to prevent damage/galling for when the oil film is sheared due to pressure, as someone stated earlier.
You can have oil as thin as water with EP additives. The problem with a lot of EP additives is they don't work well with syncronisers or yellow/white metals, which is why they're only used when needed, such as for hypoid gearsets and bevel gears in diffs.
Anyway, the 80/90 EP will be fine.

With Series Land Rovers you have to use the proper GL4 oil in the gearbox as the more common GL5 spec oil contained additives that attacked the brass internal components. Obviously not a problem with a quad axle but worth mentioning that is not just the grade that can affect things but the GL spec as well.
