Do you use it?

If you use it frequently it becomes expensive particulary when the job needs repeating to check for levelness.

I found that enigineers blue is just Prussian Blue Pigment mixed with a grease to stop it from drying up on application.

38g thats not a lot considering the repeating of getting the surface flat,it can be anywhere between £3 to £5,

Personally I've always found enigineers blue rather depresing , so how about some

Buff Titanium on Hookers Green.

used engineers blue all my working life on turbine bearings,spherical bearing housings,Slide ways and even steam turbine split-line joint faces, and the sparing amount that is used to get a true indication is very small,If it's a precision job I would stick to the engineers blue,

For smallish areas I find them very good. Mine has a broad (3/4") felt tip, and unscrews so I can top it up from my bottle of layout ink. (Though I tend to over fill it and it goes everywhere !!!!!)

I always use black or blue permanent pens for marking out.

The idea is to cover the area where you are marking out with the marking out blue, then scratch through to bright metal with your scriber - this way layout lines show up well. Then you can accurately centre pop the intersections etc.

Marking out blue is totally different from engineers blue which is a transfer medium used in scraping parts to a good fit.

We still use both types of Blue where I work.

Engineers, or soft Blue, is still used for setting in large white metal bearings and occasionally checking halving joints on gearcases. I scraped my 300TDi cylinder head flat using it with a marble table at the end of last year, darn stuff gets everywhere!

Marking out, or hard Blue, was used years ago (there were two full time liner-outs and an apprentice - me for a while). We used to work on a 12' x 10' lining out table if I remember correctly, that was where the main use for it was then. CNC pretty much done away with it now.

These days hard blue is thinly applied to gear teeth, when the gears are first run it shows the contact marking between the meshing gears. We get this in gallon cans from Cromwells.

Recently nearly had to export a can of hard Blue to Australia, as it's not available out there apparently! Luckily it was not required as it was going to be a nightmare to ship due to being a very hazardous substance.

Those tins went for £30.50 + £7.50pp which works out about £1.25 a tin,wasnt bad at that price.

Yes I considered bidding, but then realised that the tin I have I've had for perhaps 10 years and is still only half gone!!!!!!

Well the seller was a fool,if they had sold the tins individually at £2 plus £1.50p pp (Buy it now)

they would have made enough to cover the ebay fees and walked away with £66 instaed of £30.50
