Engine warning light on.

Folks.

The "Malfunction Indicator Light" lit up orange yesterday on my little 62 plate Nissan NV200 van and I'm flummoxed .

Can't see anything obvious undsr the bonnet that could have caused it, other than I drove through a seriously large puddle about 5 minutes beforehand. Circumstances as ever are against me getting the van to a garage, (I'll be driving 15 miles to work in the morning and the van will be parked there until Friday/Saturday) , so I'm wondering if it's worth buying a diagnostic tool (don't do ebay so preferably Amazon) but they're something I know nowt about so any advice would be welcome.

Any fault code that lights up the MIL should be readable by any generic diagnostics reader. Do you have AA or RAC? Whilst having your own diagnostics reader might be useful if you need it quickly you might be able to get it read by them.

If you went through a large puddle i'd leave it all dry out for a while if possible, even to the point if it starts leave it idle for 15 20 mins and see if that will reset it, some do some dont

Some reset if you disconnect the battery for 10 minutes, is it in limp mode ? I got a cheap OBDII reader and an app on the android phone just out of curiosity I didn't need it for anything but it does show what is happening.

We have a check engine light on our BMW that comes on and off - specialist said it's nothing major, just an oversensitive sensor. Bought this to turn it off and it works well:

Used to have the small plug in one to use with an app, which also worked OK, but this is easier to use.
