Engine takes ages to warm up

When we were stooging around Bear Island, Blue nose patrol and we had to hand start the emergency gas turbine engine fire pump on the flight deck.

They Sunday after we broke the 3 tins per man per day rule.

The one with the big donkey dick rubber hose. How were we told to start it?


Balance the pod.

Unload the pressure valve.

Lubricate and prime pumps

Latch the discharge pipe to open.

Slowly crank and build up speed.

Hands on end of crank handles.

Inform bridge.

Test pressure when running.


Am I correct?

Some cars have electric water heaters fitted to aid in warm up time also having large air bleed off the rad causes a long warm up time restricting the return can help, just leave enough to allow a slight return flow.

Please explain to us all why most diesel engine manuals supplied by the manufacturers of diesel engined cars state clearly in their own manuals that when you start a diesel engine, particularly a turbo engine, that you should start it and let it idle for anything up to two minutes to circulate the engine oil before driving off?

Point me at a manual that says that and I'll point you at hundreds of posts about coked manifolds and blocked EGRs that are predicated on causes of short, cold journeys.
I find your choice of words interesting; "most diesel engine manuals supplied by the manufacturers of diesel engined cars"; are you about to feed us relevant information from car manuals or, as is your wont, hint at dark and dastardly information that is only supplied from engine manufacturers to car manufacturers, none of which makes it to us poor consumers due to dark forces?

How true! also when it turns to one sheet of ice and they corner or brake sharply, flies off as one lump (with some weight in it) and hits a pedestrian and a huge claim and criminal charges hit them.

Could be the next trick in a James Bond Movie. Bit like Odd Job and his top hat
