@danbrown89 the lamp is amazing, I wish I had bought the lot. Seeing things I never knew existed. Even in my own barge!
I have spent too much time working in gloomy machinery spaces.
Please do not criticise the dust and muddle. But now I have no excuse Luckily the 1952 standard Gardner colour was a dim shade a grey..
(How much are these lights to buy new anyone, please? Lost the instuction booklet so cant search

A philosophical point after a glass of wine, reflecting back on my experiences:
Every single engine room, whether it be narrowboat, barge, trawler, tug, dredger, car ferry
railway arch, or what effing ever,has been blessed with lighting similar to Madame Tussaud's Chamber of Horrors...or the spooky flickering of nervously going upstairs in a 1970's horror film in your undies, wondering what that noise was!

With the best will in the world, I have broken expensive things brcause I was holding a torch in my mouth. And then got the blame. A £1000 set of compressor piston rings in an Aberdeen trawler springs to mind.

It is a false economy trying to save on lighting, and from now on I will never do anything unless it is lit up like a christmas tree, in these days of LED's there is no excuse.
Those ones that danbrown89 sent are the literal dogs.

Engine room looks cleaner than any I've seen.

Anyway, For lighting confined spaces I'd consider a LED festoon coz you can't beat multiple bright sources of light for lighting shadowed areas. Loads of them used on site now 110V double-insulated. Cheap, bright, and waterproof. I think they are set 2m apart.

Made in Papendracht in 1895, rivetted iron. The Victorian equivalent of an HGV, 44 tons, originally powered by the wind and if not, towed by animals. (And actually towed by people, in the 1940's when the krauts had taken the Dutch animals)

The 1952 Gardner 4LW was added in about 1970. Lovely motor, it starts before you can take your finger off the button and runs like a sewing machine.

The installation was a bit agricultural, and the mild steel prop-shaft recently friction-welded itself to the inside of the stern tube, so a dry dock is booked for this fairly major surgery. (Will post pics when it happens..)

The cause was poor choice of material and lack of lube. grease.
Probly bite the bullet and go for stainless.
I'm fairly terrified how much that will cost, I may have to repair the vessel then sell her to keep my head above water.

It woukd be sacrilege to let her condition as a seaworthy vessel go downhill, when you have a historic thing you are a bit like a custodian, with a responsibility to preserve a historic artefact for future generations.

The rig is gaff cutter, the jib in the piccy is too small (it's a tops'l purloined off the Malcolm Miller T/S) which is the other main thing which needs replacement to keep her a functioning sailing boat.
