Can anyone recommend me a decent workshop to rebore my David Brown engine, preferably around Manchester or into West Yorks. I possibly want some other work doing as well like valve seats re-cut.
Ive phoned a couple of places local to Rochdale but they both sub-out the reboring work. Id much rather deal with the person that's going to do the work and be responsible for it. Finding a good David Brown block that hasnt succumbed to frost is a bit of a chore, so value the one I've now got quite highly.
I did take my block into one shop in Rochdale that claimed they did the rebores and gave me a price over the phone. On turning up with the block I was instantly told it would be more epensive than I was quoted as it was a four cylinder. I had specified it was a four cylinder over the phone. The chap in the workhop then proceeded to try and measure the existing with a very trick looking Sunnen bore gauge and setting micrometer. I was far from convinced when after three or four attempts he still couldnt tell me the bore size. At one point he claimed it was already 40thou oversize. I questioned this as my own measurements reckoned about 10 thou over, there were no marks on the pistons to indicate oversize. At one point he also claimed it was 20 thou overbored. Bottom line is he was far from convincing and I dont think he is fit to get my work, so want to take my block elsewhere.
Suggestions or otherwise welcome and advice on peoples experiences please.
