Engine machining

Not sure if this is right place for this but, are there any members here who still have interests in the custom car / hot rod World, I am looking for pads, rods, or any other kind of tooling that is used in a pillar drill for for engine machine finishes on steel and aluminium ?

Never tried it myself but in the film "Spirit of St Louis" it showed the makers of the plane using wooden doweling with grinding paste on the end.

Think the expression is 'engined turned'. Mate did this over the entire body work on a RR special. Gotta be patient, as he was! Panels were too big to put under a pillar drill.

My panels to be used will be quite small by comparison, I know where to buy the abrasive rods and pads from, but as usual they are in the US, with all the added extras that brings.

Nothing was safe from the grinding paste/sawn off broom handle with a bolt through it in a drill Everything from ali engine mounts on the bikes to dashboards on the cars had to have swirls.

I remember it well Bob, customising in the 60's and 70's has a lot to answer for.

Cromwell / Zoro do or did a non 3M version of the Roloc with a push on disc, I have a box of discs in various grades, more than I will ever use but only one arbor or I would have offered to send you some.

Edit: I will try to dig them out on Saturday and take a picture of the arbor

I have an Abracs set that includes the scotch pads that I got at the local factors.

Give me 10mins and I'll tell you if it works

For what I have in mind Bob they will last long enough for what need to do, Roloc abors are about a tenner and a box of fifty one inch eighty grit discs are around a tenner.

Well I think it works.

My very first attempt at engine turning.
890 revs on a bit of scrap stainless

Don't know how long a disc would last but for short runs I'd say it would work ok.



For long runs, the brush shaft and grinding paste might be more consistent but I've really no idea.
