Been on my 2do list for a long time. Just cosmetic so not a priority. Here is what I'm dealing with:
Apparently, they welded the sheet metal on over the bare support. Then painted. Never sealed the metal. So water sits between support and sheet metal. The above is the worst of 3.
The 4th is worst:
There was a bit more of the metal on the left side holding the fender and some bits still clinging to the supports. Otherwise, not much left
New piece fitted cut from old clothes dryer:
Tried arc as I figured doing a lap weld of the thin on the heavy brackets would not be bad and my leads reached outside. Just cant' get the metal to sit tight so just burned back. So dragged trailer in garage (real pain as it will only fit under the door after playing games with tow setup and tire pressure.) Now I can use the MIG
Tricky part is it is 1mm steel welded on 5mm brackets. Set MIG to fuse well to 5mm and you vaporize the sheet. Set to work on sheet and it won't fuse to the 5mm. Found a setting that worked with tall welds and not too bad blow through.
Decided to just tack it all the way around. Would allow water to flow out crack. Will hit with lots of sealer. I should have made the metal longer and put a lip on the back to make it easier to weld.
Still need to patch the others. Nice I managed to get it in the garage as it has been mid '90s this week (35c deg).
