Emigrating to Perth without any Welding qualifications. Advice needed.

Hi folks!

Put yourself in my shoes: I'm 25-years-old, have 5 years basic welding experience (90% being in MIG and in a standard flat position) and shall be emigrating to Perth on a permanent basis with my Australian partner and our two children.

Now then, what would YOU be looking to do over the next 18 months in order to ensure that you are in the best position possible to find a good job quickly upon arriving down under?

I should probably point out that I already have my C&G Level 2 certs in both MIG and MMA, although I'm guessing they will count for very little when I'm living on the other side of the world.

Please just give me advice and not sarcasm or negativity. I will definitely be emigrating and just want to know what I should do between now and then.

Chap called "sip Merlin" has done much the same and still posts on here so look up post by him to find his experiences.

Hi Mike,

I've messages SIPMerlin for some advice/guidance, hopefully he'll get back to me soon.

I'm considering doing further training and getting 6G coded (either TIG root with MIG fill and cap or all MMA) in the UK prior to departing for Oz but I am worried that our codings will count for little out there, meaning I will have wasted a lot of time and money.

Just want to know what folk would do in my position.

Hello Gary,

why not contact the Australian Embassy, they may well have information on what is and is not transferable as far as qualifications and coding go? It must be quite a common question for all trades really?

Codings will act as a reference as to you being able to weld to a recognised standard and as such may well be worth getting, the fact that you will have to re test when you go for a job in Oz is just the same as if you went for a job in the UK unless you are working on a self employed basis.
