I bought some cast brass 'Mickey Mouse' wing nuts off ebay for a stove I'm making, they were 3/8 BSW. I found some old brass and made some studs for them and realised that I knew the angle of Whitworth threads was 55 deg. Now, I've never used this information in my working life, so, it must have been retained from Brooklands Tech some 35 ish years ago. It started me thinking, I know Pi, some random tapping drill sizes and bend allowances will be with me 'til the grave, what other engineering info has everyone else got embedded in their brains. Or am I a bit sad.

I know loads of stuff but can usually only remember it when it is totally irrelevant to the situation.

For me it's numbers, pretty much every phone number I've dialled regularly since I was a kid and also most of the registration numbers from the many, many cars I've owned.

If you're into mnemonics another good one for remembering the order of the planets is My very educated mother just served up nine pizzas - Mercury, Venus, Earth and so on.

The other one? I learned the order as a tragic nerdy adult by reading books. Mnemonics are truly great things.

But I passed all my exams using mnemonics, we made up our own, they were all obscene, but me and my mate learned them and passed; just.

I can remember mad nights marching round out flat shouting them out at each other.

OMG i was just reading through this thread and was thinking about Pi -i used to know it down to 49 decimal places. There was a banner in the maths classroom and i made it my mission to beat my mates in learning the lot! Never really come in handy though......
