Elliot Progress No 1 Drill Chuck Problem

Please, I have a similar No. 1 Elliott (090566 618), but I cannot get my head around it at all :-(

Electrically it is fine. But when I drill a hole, the bit gets stuck in the work. The column moves back up OK, but it leaves the chuck and shaft behind.

I understand that the chuck and its shaft has to rotate within the column, but I do not understant how the column drags the shaft upwards. On my machine the trust bearing seems happy to sit just inside the colum. Is it held there by the grub screw? That doesn't seem quite right.

What is the function of the grove? I bought the drill on Ebay a few years ago, but I am only getting round to sorting it out now. I can't help but feel that there is something missing.

Any advice?

If you look at the top bearing it looks like there should be a circlip to stop the shaft moving up and down inside the quill. No 15 on the diagram

I can't find any reference in the manual to the grub screw, although there may be differences between individual drills.

The grub screw may have been fitted by a previous owner and the groove worn by the screw because it was fitted in the wrong place!

Or maybe there should be a grease nipple in that hole?

in the pic above of where the hole in the shaft is, it is NOT for a grub screw.
that hole is there for greasing.
you should have a collar around that to hold the drill stop, in the centre of the collar is a thread for the grease nipple.
here is a pic below of what it should look like.
your drill is simply missing the circlip above the top bearing by pulley wheel.
