Managed to get the drill completely stripped. Taken a wire wheel to the paint. Now I'm no painter, no spray equipment either. What would my next step be? Paint recommendations would be helpful.

I used ordinary household paint on mine. Don't use a water-based primer though, I've used it in the past and the item went rusty!

Originally the casting was filled then painted, a good quality enamel (e.g. Paragon) brushed on should give good results depending on technique.

Get some decent brush on metal paint or 2K for a long lasting durable finish. Do not waste your time with Hammerite!

Wickes version of Hammerite isn't bad provide you use 2 coates.

@Seadog I'll give that a try. I'm not expecting perfection. Just something to keep the rust at bay, and look reasonable. Thanks.

That paint @Seadog linked is the Paragon enamel - very nice paint.

The stuff that @Seadog linked to looks great and not a bad price too.

I did mine with hammerite which I know seems to be frowned upon (it was what I had in the cupboard at the time so it was going on whatever) but to be honest the colour is actually really nice (green) and it seems hard wearing enough.
