Electrolytic Rust Removal

a few pictures of my first ever set up for electrolytic rust removal. The sewing machine side panels are simply too complex to use conventional techniques so this is my first attempt.

Didn't have a bucket big enough so decided to make a tray type arrangement with some manky old breakfast bar top and broken down pallets. The clamps are there to hold it all flat as the work top is bowed.

Lined with 1000 gauge poly sheet and test out for size

Set up battery charger and anode

Now just gotta buy some soda crystals tommorow and off we go

That's about 20 meters away, don't forget, for my real job I'm a H&S person. Can you imagine the ribbing I'd get if I went to the office with my hair missing and had to explain why

I won't get to that stage till Friday as I'm away with work all week and don't want to leave it running unattended

Mind tend to it with a beer in hand, could be more exciting than watching paint dry

Ive found in the past it has an uphill job getting past paint though.

It varies. Some stuff literally peels off, whilst others seem to treat the process with disdain and stick firm. That looks like it's more along the lines of a japanned or enamelled finished though, so should probably lift or scrub off easily enough.

Put this lawnmower grassbox in to "cook" this afternoon and it's fizzing away nicely with a primeval scum coming to the surface. As the process works on a "line of sight " basis I have several anodes around the perimeter of the tank.

I've got an anode at each end, shoul I have one along each of the sides too?

The more the merrier, I think. My small tank, a rectangular plastic storage box is completely lined with sheet steel, sides and base.

Either /either. It'll work fine as is, but adding an extra couple won't hurt.
