I just need to do one job only so it doesn't have to last long but long enough for it to finish the de-rusting. Having said that I do have a couple of plastic buckets that I could use as well.

Use the tray as the anode, but put it in a bucket?

Nope, one or the other. If I use the buckets then I will have to add some metal in it to act as the anode, If I use a tray then the tray will be the anode. Hope that makes sense.

Yes it makes sense right up until it leaks over the floor.
Make sure to isolate parts from the annode either way

I knew I had an image of my heater in use.

Middle LHS you can see the top of the old water heater salvaged from a hand hot water heater.

The lash up looks bad, but is safe. The heater is earthed, through a RCD and a lower rated than normal thermal fuse fitted. The temp is set to 40Deg C and when the tank is hot keeps it at a good temp.

What this doesn't show is how energetic the reaction is.


The sludge can be used to age wood.
