Making progress on the mini van, panel work finished and epoxy primered with 2 high build primer in progress where needed.

I am using a SIP V300/100. It struggles a bit keeping up, whilst this isn’t a great issue with primer it may be a different matter when it comes too top coat.

I don’t have room for a bigger compressor so I’m looking for options. Is there an electric spray gun that can be used for cars that will give a good finish?

You would be better with a LVLP gun, like the FMT3006 which is capable of good results. Bear in mind that polyester primers must be overcoated very quickly, else they start absorbing moisture which leads to microblistering. A better idea is to use enough coats of epoxy to do the job, giving a fully waterproof barrier.

Did fine with solvent paint not sure with high build primer

I'd go with lvlp too - but bear in mind you'll need a larger tip for the heavier weight primer (1.8) than topcoats /clear coat (1.3 or 1.4). You can use the same gun - just change the tips. I wouldn't have thought you could get the same finish with electric. And don't skimp on the correct mask/filters....

I have got an old Earlex HV5000 spray station. Its like a vacuum cleaner in reverse. Bearing in mind that I am apprenticed body and paint, I am always amazed at how good a finish it gives. I don't really use the compressor for paint spraying any more.

The noisy piston types are a bit hit and miss, and you must make sure you clear the panel before triggering off, as they always seem to splutter a bit (or a lot)

Always wanted one, but could never justify it. Used one though, and they are excellent.

I used a VolumAire HVLP French jobby to paint gen sets (and my car) but they're like hens' teeth and expensive.
The more availiable Apollo sets are still not cheap, but they do a diy grade one which is actually quite good value and will produce the same results as the more expensive ones.
