Electric chainsaw brushes

I have a Florabest/Grizzly electric chainsaw from Lidl which has done well for a few years but recently stopped. I found the brushes were worn out and got a pair of 3rd-party (not manufacturers') brushes to fit. Now there are enough sparks coming from the brushes to start a fire in a logpile and it doesn't seem to be making any power. So, questions - are all brushes created equal, or have I bought some rubbish ones? Might the new brushes just be bedding themselves in? I did put some sandpaper round the commutator and give them a bit of a rub. Or might the capacitor in the motor be unhappy with the new brushes?

as long as they are the correct size they should work, are you sure there isn't a problem with the commutator that caused the original brushes to wear down

a couple of the windings have gone and the brushes are jumping the bad segments and burning . the armature has had it ​

you can usually tell by looking at the old brushes, the ends will be badly pitted if there is a problem, you can get a commutator stick that will clean up the surface whilst its running but its not always possible to get access

That's strange lidl are well known for the very highest quality power tools, no expense spared on their construction.

Is it still in there warranty period, 2 or 3 years ??

Did you clean the slots out as well ?

The segments always go on walkabouts on those cheap tools. You know by now I pull every tool I see out of the skip and test it, that fault is very common.

Thanks for all the words of wisdom. I have put a meter on the commutator and found that there is something like 3 ohms between them all, not just the pairs opposite each other. I'm no expert but I think that's not how it should be?

that is possibly correct.... you need to be looking for sins of arcing on the segments, 2 of them (opposite each other) will prob look more burnt than the others

Can't say I see any burning on the segments, but the problem has gone away - Lidl are selling the same saw next Thursday for £50! Hurrah!
