EGR cleaners!!!!!! any good

Sisters Audi A1 has an EGR fault she has ben qoutoed nearly 900 quid to replace it. I dont mind sorting it for her but I am a bit tight on time at the moment. I ve seen some vids regarding EGR cleaners Wynns in particular. Anyone one here used it to any good results

Not really, normally just a temporary fix before you’re back to square one again. Best to remove it and clean it up properly.

Waste of money and can make things worse by shifting some of the deposits further down, causing problems with intake manifold & inlet valves.
Has it been confirmed as EGR valve / cooler or is it based on the DTC P0401-00 which can be a sensor issue or a vac. solenoid (this is the most common cause).
If it's a blocked cooler, no amount of cleaner will help.

Audi garage diagnose. AH well looks like a job for next week, I do hate working on cars its not the same as trucks and tractors with big spanners lol

What tyoe of driving is she doing?
If its a short commute ot shop runs then its probably just clogged.
My xtrail has a habit of showing the mil after alot of short journeys in the warmer weather. But it does go off after an Italian tune up. Currently on a road trip and it's been fine. I've not needed to clear the code

Hi R, It all mainly town runs I have told her to walk on short journeys, what's an Italian tune up? her car goes into limp mode, as I was going to rag it round the bypass to see if would shift it lol

basically warm the car up for five mins normal driving then stick to above four and a half thousand revs for over half an hour , [ drive round the bypass a couple of gears lower than normal] ,,, they seem to be the magic numbers with electronics , then let it sit and tick over for 15 mins before turning off to avoid hot spots

That's excessive and potentially damaging depending on the engine., the DPF will regen at temperatures >500 deg. C. regen is halted if it goes above 650 deg. C as it can cause the DPF 'core' to shed precious metals.
You also need to check engine oil level and for oil dilution caused by failed regen's.

ETA - if the EGR has a mechanical defect, that won't cure it, neither will it shift any oil / carbon sludge in the EGR, it'll just bake it on at best.

Its definatly sooted up. What I did do was to pull the part out of the throttle body and give it a clean and the pipe, I couldn't see any light through the pipe at first. Ive watched a few vid on the tube and most people think this part is the EGR valve but it isn't the EGR valve goes on the back of the engine and is a real pain to do. Might give a good run later.

Im using injectorex from wurth at the moment as a carbon solvent in hard to reach places , and it seems to work well ,,, works well as a standard penetrating oil too , but its fairly aggressive.

If its the 1.6 diesel im replacing egrs all the time in them, lost count of how many ive done, spurious ones are unreliable , fit the genuine unit from vw , about half a days work if your used to them, if its a 5speed you can slide it out towards the gearbox, on the 6speed you must remove the turbo oil feed/return.
Dont crack the two studs on the exhaust manifold holding the gas feed pipe or it might ruin your day

Hi all since my last post a couple of hours ago I let the car idle to temperature then I drove the car for 59 miles, the first 17 miles in 2nd gear 3000rpm just keeping it out of limp mode there was lots of surging, then approx the next 20 miles in 3rd 3000rpm much better then back home in 3rdand 4th keeping it to 3000rpm. Then a good blast up round the bypass in all gears. And I am pleased to say its running a treat I have cleared the codes and the dash lights are off and staying off. All seams to be working perfect. My sister is very happy, and so am I.

I’ve done a few VAG cars but I tend to take off the OS drive shaft for better access , it only takes a few minutes and makes the job so much easier. Jobs like that make me glad I’ve retired
