On an external tapered thread I would think half way along . On internal threads it all gets a bit more complicated ... An M8 nut doesnt have a hole down the middle thats 8mm , it's the tapping size ( somewhere about 6.5mm) so it makes measuring the thread size of internal threads rather more complicated. What is it off.? The two most common ( so it's likely to be , but not deffo) either BSPT (British standard pipe- taper) or NPT ( National Pipe- taper. ) The American equivalent. 1/8 BSP ( tapered or not) is common on car oil pressure guages.
In Switzerland I looked at a boilers piping and asked" Is that BSP then?" "Yes", was the reply - "no one has ever come up with a better system- why bother?" So maybe the Europeans don't have a system.

In principle, you need to know the standard or specification to which the thread has been produced and read what it says in that document.

They do. It is ISO 7 pipe threads... ...which are a metricised version of BSP.

And I thought I was going to buy some bathroom and kitchen plumbing furniture from Spain, don't suppose it's compatible.

It's pretty much identical.
They just remove the " from after the size, and put a G in front of it. I.e. 1/4" is now G1/4

Sorry. I think my post above was unclear. The European pipe thread is physically identical in every way to BSP. It is just that when it is described in writing or on a drawing, the words and numbers are metric ones.
A small possibility for difference is the thread on the sink outlet (plug hole). I can only speak for commercial kitchen sinks - they have a metric thread on them, but it is easy to buy an adaptor (McAlpine sell it).

So basically our Europen friends use the old BSP system , but formalised into a modern ISO metric standard.
