Edwards currently offer a range of oils for rotary vacuum pumps, including Ultragrade, which is a range of modified mineral oils; TW which is a distilled mineral oil; Edwards 45, a synthetic hydrocarbon, and the the perfluoropolyether oils Fomblin and Crytox. They are all characterised by low vapour pressures, which help to achieve the best ultimate vacuum possible with these pumps under different working conditions. "ordinary" engine oils have higher vapour pressures and would degrade the ultimate vacuum obtained. Ultragrade or Edwards TW should be fine for most applications, but don't try silicone-based diffusion pump oil. It's lubricity is almost non-existent!

I thought Fomblin and Crytox were extras in Star Trek.
Seriously, yet again the body of knowledge on this site is amazing.
One day somebody willl find a tech question that no one here can answer. Maybe.
Chunko'.
You only need this for pumping oxygen or oxygen rich gases. Are you using it for vacuum bagging or resing degassing ?
