Easier welding with generators nowadays.

For many years i've done mobile welding as part of my day job in parks etc where theres no power supply,

Initially they gave me an old buzzbox which would need about 6kva of genny to drive it to burn a 2.5 rod,
then they gave me a 140 inverter i'm guessing about 12 years back that needed about 4kva plus for a 2.5,

I supply my own machine now which is a Miller 160sth,
not used it on a genny yet so took a chance and hired a 3.4kva genny today, so with fingers crossed it ran 90 amps on a 2.5 rod!
its taken a while for the manufacturers to get there but you can now get the same welding output for about half of the power input needed that you would 15-20 years ago.

For the price of them could you not of bought a cheap genny/welder for those jobs that are few and far between?

Mosa gensets come up often enough, the little mosa Magic weld is a cracking little welder

I've not long bought a Genset 225 set which is quite small and a lot lighter than my Lincoln Ranger. Even got it set up for mig welding with a suitcase feeder

Most of my mobile welding is from a mains supply,
its only about 10% of the jobs that has no power where a genny is needed so its a big outlay for an odd job,
now i know the genny makes the grade i'll stick with it.

Hire in myself, Can get a good genny welder for £80 for a full week. Not worth storing one, servicing one or using up capital . I will however buy as big an AVR genny as I can fit in the truck one day as being on rural supply were we sometimes loose all power it could do double duty but thinking 9KVA as a big un can do what a little un cant but the reverse isn't true.
