Earthing rod

Does it have to be copper?
Can a length of steel do the job?
This is for an outdoor shed,no bonding inside ie water or metal outlets
House CU is TT earthed shed is 15M away from this,with its own CU

Rust would be an issue, copper earth rods are surprisingly cheap

Steel will rust pretty quick = no earth. We use copper rods. If you're stuck I suppose a length of copper pipe would do if it doesn't bend hammering it in.

They are only copper plated these days!

One for the house isn't copper,looks to me like galv steel,prob been fitted many years ago,house is 1926

It's more the driving to the scrappie, then the time to go find an electrical shop.

Or walk to shed, get it, hammer it in.

why do you want a rod outside the shed .if the house supply is tt the feed to shed needs to be rcd protected and will be back at house cu and have a rod there

and if you have an earth rod back at supply which you will have you don't just stick them in the ground and thats it . they need testing it has to be under 200 ohms resistance . in decent damp soil and clay you can get it down to about 30 ohms and even less the rods are steel copper coated with a solid brass connection clamp that's left visible above ground in an earth pit of an enclosure and joint wrapped with denso tape or self amalgamating tape
