I need to construct a steel boat hull for a houseboat - as a greenhorn with no experience do I get someone to make it for me - or, as I fancy- get my hands dirty and do the job myself - I'm in the UK. What problems can I expect? thanks - Ross
I would seriously consider getting a professional coded welder to do the hull. I've had one or two customers over the years that have done just that & then welded fittings on the deck themselves. At least you know the hull is sound if welded by a professional and it will pass a marine survey.
Took me a few years of practice before I was confident in making watertight welds, although I'd imagine a boat hull would be thicker than the stuff I tend to work with which makes the job easier.
Have you seem Silas' houseboat construction photos? His build was contracted out, although it was in aluminium so much more tricky.
With some decent kit, a thorough read of whatever regs there are for these things, a training course in MIG (or maybe even Stick) welding to get you up to speed, and a houseboat sized workshop I'd have thought it would be possible to do it yourself. I'd be surprised if the regs require a coded welder, although that would be the easy way of ensuring a quality job.
