Ear defenders

My old cheapo ear defenders snapped the other night. Thinking of treating myself to some nice ones - something a bit more effective and comfortable than the normal ones.

Can anyone recommend a source for nice ones? Had a quick look. Peltor ones look tidy - any others?

Try 3M model 1440, has a snr of 27db or JSP model Monza which has a snr of 31db.

The folding Bilsom ones are pretty good, although i tend to use ear plugs, they fit much easier under a headshield

Thanks for those. That's way more options than I'd found. I'm an acoustics engineer so makes sense to protect my hearing a little. That Bilsom website looks like it was written by acoustics engineers. Probably too much info for most but I'm finding it great fun. Will check back later.

Bilsom or Silenta, having been a shooter all my life I can tell you they work well, they have to for me 'cos I'm a cinema sound engineer to trade, my ears are my business

Although like Hitachimad I like plugs as they don't get in the way of headhsields etc. I got a huge bag of them from a motorbike shop for sweeties, they fit and work well, but do check the attenuation specs on anything you buy, some of them are really just to keep dust and beasties out of yer lug 'oles.

Suppose the attenuataion required would depend on what you are doing and for how long. The Bilsom ones are suggesting 30dB (but I've not figured out how to buy them yet).

But any lump of plastic is going to manage 20dB. Seems to me that fit has to be really important with both earplugs and ear defenders. It would be easy to measure good attenuation using an acoustic head with a nice ever surface around the ears, but humans are funny shaped.

I'd guess the pricier ear defenders have a nice soft contact surface like good listening headphones. The rubbish ones (like I had before they fell apart) have quite a hard plastic contact surface. That has to be a big difference between the cheap and the nice ones.

The Keep Safe folding muffs here look ok. 2 different attenuation levels, and I like the folding thing. I havn't used them mind, but it's a Bunzl company so the gear shouldn't be duff.

Update - finally bought a set of ear defenders. Peltor Optime 31dB £13 from Screwfix. Fantastic - way more comfy and quiter than the nasty £5 plastic things. No point spending more for garage stuff.
