E9 marked headlights and mots

If I replace the entire headlight unit on my landrover with an E9 marked LED unit, is that MOT worthy?

Note - not a halogen bulb, not a bulb conversion, but the entire 7" unit with an E9 marked unit.

Internet says yes. Internet also says Marilyn and Elvis are alive and well and living on Mars...

From that page,

Existing halogen headlamp units on vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 must not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp for light source and lamp not compatible.

This does not refer to complete replacement headlamp units which may be constructed with HID or LED light sources.

If a complete headlamp unit has been replaced with a unit that was manufactured with HID or LED light sources, it must not be failed for ‘Light source and lamp not compatible’ but it must meet all other requirements detailed in section 4 of this manual specific to the type fitted at the time of test.

I would say that as long as the beam pattern looks right, it should not be an issue. But then I don't have anything to do with MOT testing.

Be aware that all of the Chinese DOT marked 7" LED units are LHD, just in case you tried to save some money over the genuine item.

My mate had them on his 90 for 3 or 4 years no issues with mot other than I don’t like the LED. Look

If its a flat dip, ie no kick up, you might be okay. I was okay passing IVA and several MOTs since with American spec LHD factory lamps in my Dodge.

Here's my bike's HID converted headlamp. It's a projector headlamp which gives a great beam pattern I'm sure it would pass the MOT but I put a normal bulb in for it anyway because it's only a couple of minutes' work.

Most bike conversions spray the light in every direction they should definitely be failed.

E9 just tells you it conforms to EU standards and was tested to conformity in spain*

What i am never sure about with this is whether that means it conforms to LHD standards only or whether they are fine in a RHD car provided a RHD version has been produced of course.

They’ll be fine.

If you look at your car, the existing lamps and reflectors should have E markings on them.

Traffic police look for them on aftermarket stuff to see if it’s road legal.

Apparently a letter punch heated up looks about the same. Apparently.

One of my boys fitted some of the cheaper LED headlight units and they didn't last that well. Think they were taken off at just under 2 years as they were going yellow and the ring lights (used as side & indicator) started flickering badly. Just normal road use

nothing said about my led projectors inside stock lights , beam cut off is cracking and they cant open to see ive altered things

100% but from what I've seen FB group posts made while sitting on the toilet about something you mate's friend said seem to be the common answer.

As far as I'm concerned if someone can't reference an official document it doesn't mean anything at all.
