Dvla type question, can I transfer “on retention" reg no. to a mate without him having to put it on a vehicle?

As above I've got a reg number on a retention certificate, and a mate wants it, but he doesn't want to put it on a, motor just yet.
Can I transfer or assign the number to him "on paper"?.. if you see what I mean. I've looked it up and it's not that clear (to me!)

Yes, you can change the nominee details on the v778.
I think you have to post it in tho, don't think you can do it online.

If you are mates then you could just wait until he wants to use it then assign it directly to his car.

They only sit on retention 10 years…then lost

I've had it maybe 4 or 5 so still OK, but good point to mention

You can just renew the retention after the 10yrs is up.
For a fee obviously!
