Dumb celly questions

Express Paints told me that cellulose paint is what to use if I want a matt finish. I've also tried Lechler Isolack 2K, but even their most matt option has a sheen to it, which I'm told is a characteristic of 2k.

Can celly go onto wet epoxy primer?
Do I thin it with regular "standard thinners", ie the stuff I clean my gun with?
Can celly go direct onto factory car paint?

Pls don't ask why I'm doing this unless you want a long and boring explanation. It's a bodge repair on a throw away car.

You cannot buy celulose for a modern paint code. Pre 70's car maybe 80 you can.

yes it should go over wet on wet epoxy

thin with cellulose thinners...its better grade than gunwash , gunwash would mix though

yes would go over modern factory paint ...if its seen some previous repairs it may frazzle up

what about matt 2k clear coat ...how do you think these trendy matt cars are repainted at the dealers

Thanks for the input. Is "standard thinner" just gunwash or is it designed to be a thinner?

Re colour code, this is just a "stop rust" repair. Previous owner used bondo which has absorbed water and started rusting. I've removed the bondo and rust, applied epoxy primer and will put my matt black celly over it. I just don't want a glossy top coat. Leaving exposed epoxy hasn't worked for me in the past as the UV quickly starts turning it to powder.

Never used epoxy primer but celly is thinners. I wouldn't spray it over anything until the primer was good and dry.

if it says gun wash on the can its not really meant for painting(but it would work) ...standard ought to be the basic thinners for painting

From what I understand it's illegal to sell it for cars over a certain year. The way manufacturers enforce the rules is not to provide the codes for those cars. It doesn't stop some shops though...

Same happened when I bought solvent based colour coat for my last car.... "we can't sell you that paint for a car, it's illegal", me: "I'm just spray painting a shipping container" them "you're spray painting a shipping container in Suzuki metallic blue?" me "yes", them "ok then"

I would use a synthetic enamel, my local paint shop will mix it to any colour code and it goes on like celly paint. The stuff I use is selemix 7-610.

To get the satin or matt finish they add a matting agent when they mix the paint, the more they add the duller the finish. So whoever told you to only use cellulose paint to get a matt finish is talking rubbish!

Cheap thinners is only good for cleaning your gun or brushes. Its commonly made from recycled thinners, normally contains a % of water and can cause all sorts of problems in a paint job. Only use whatever thinners that are recommended by the paint shop or manufacturer for mixing paint.
