Drystane Dyke

Anyone here built a Drystane Dyke or for you southerners a Dry stone wall just recieved a book more a booklet but not much use have sent for another by author Rob Gallagher hopefully this will have more info. I understand the principle e.g. one over two - two over one and through stones also the theory what you pick it up must be used.

This will be this summers project so if anything by last years summer should be built in a fortnight!

Ive watched them doing it at Chatsworth Fair. Its good how they always seem to find the bit of stone of the right size.

Other than that they use a frame (bit like an A) to gauge the size of the wall.

My old man did a course in it a few years ago(weekend thing I think), and he found learning like that is a lot more productive than trying to do it from a book. It was run by these folk.

They are close to here was thinking of that but dont think the other half could cope with four kids on her own. There is an old guy here that I could possibly encourage with a slab of beer and a feed to come over and give a few pointers.

Make the frame like a capital " A " to what ever size you feel like , our church wall was four feet high about 3 foot at the bottom and I haven't a clue as to the top , we made two frames..

We started in the middle of the wall using both frames and three lines each side .
Once the first 15 feet or so were laid to full height we went separate ways , used more lines and worked at both ends ..it was easier as there was some 15 guys labouring and 9 building .

May join the kirk then! it is only me so far and maybe a mate as he is keen on learning have just been onto the local ground works guy he has been collecting stones for me and have found a farmer with a corner of a field with a large pile of stone. A stone mason friend is carving a stone with the house name into it for the entrance, actually looking forward to giving this a go.

For your reference: a Dyke in Scotland is a wall in Ireland it is a field drain or small burn probably from the Galic : boundary down south probably worth looking into!

Yep, we used to call small drainage ditches 'dykes' or 'goyles' here in North Devon.

Never heard of Goyle but when over at the outlaws in Southern Ireland was asked to go get something from over by the dyke, came back saying I could not find the wall to a bemused look from the mother-in-law. Is there not a form of Galic in Devon?

I don't think anyone is having a go at hitch, however, I do find it demeaning to have my post altered without even a what for.

I realise there have to be rules for any forum, my thoughts on what I posted/typed was more humorous than offensive, did anyone hit "report post button"?

Same for "pencil holder" post, but we discussed and closed this malcolm.

I will not apolgise for having a sense of humour, I feel I should be allowed to decide what is acceptable and, I do have a good grasp of what is humour or offensive.

Easy way to resolve this is to delete my account, just in case I offend anyone else.

I will second that! was not aware that things were directed at Hitch did not realise it had been altered by him I thought it was the organ grinder himself. Yes that is supposed to be humour! Just a thought have many of you worked in a shop floor enviroment? I seriously doubt so! You are getting a little bit over the top sensor wise in my opinion, have you considered working in a library. p.s. more humour! God forbid a night out at the morgue.

As a brew room thread, i felt it was heading a bit off topic, so just removed the offtopic comments., which had begun to out number the on-topic posts. It wasnt reported, i just happened to see it. Not all moderation here is acted upon from reports.
That was my reason. Much less to do with the fact it might be offensive to a few.

As long standing and well respected members of the forum, i thought both Runnach and Sam would have known the rules, so just removed a few comments, i didnt think it was neccessry to send all involved PMs.

This might have been a different ending should it have been in the social club.
