Drying times wall behind shower

In a place ive been asked to fix damp problem turns out it's all been down to a shower enclosure tile Grout and possably where shower was installed in to the wall letting water in been like it for years as a guess


So it's been riped out and new shower to going in

Questions

I'm guessing the plaster behind is all naffed? So has to come off

And if that's done how long before it can be replastard how long would you need for thr walls to dry out ?

take the old plasterboard or plaster off, reboard with aquapanel or similar, pretty much ready to go once the adhesive has set.
Remember to prime the wall

strip it back to brick. if the bricks are damp if they are stick a little 2kw heater in for a day and dry em out. prime the wall with sbr bonding agent and re plaster or board it dot and dab using backer board

I'd go backer board too but screwed to the wall, no issues then with the weight of tiles to be added. If the existing plaster is still adhered to the wall leave it place.

the walls damp the other side of the wall as well so id say its soaking wet ive left it for 3 days with the heating on and at the moment very little drying has been done

If you are sure it is not water ingress from the outside in then backerboard will be your best bet screwed not dot.

But now we are in to the damp season, 3 days is not enough and your method of drying, while it will help, will be slow going.

Also is it skim on bonding or render? the latter being better and it's a corner area, notorious for drying, let it dry thoroughly or as much as possible, attach your BB and pay some attention to the type of fixings you use to attach your BB, you don't want those degrading.

I use heat as suggested and a dehumidifier - aging EBAC thing.

If it dry outside - heat and open the windows...

but after nocking the tiles off the plaster is all very wet

its a skim over bonding plaster random as i thought the out side walls should be hard wall or cement ?

Plus one for dehumidifier - it will suck the water out of the damp walls whereas a heater will just produce a damp atmosphere (until you open the door). I'd certainly strip off all the plaster as it loses a lot of "grip" once it's been thoroughly damp for a long period.

It's always best practice to use render to any areas likely to be affected by damp, be it window walls to shower areas with brick walls.

It will dry out so long as whatever caused the damp has been resolved.

Once dry, see if the bonding is still attached, if it is and you've sorted damp issues you should be ok to attach BB.

If not, hack bonding off to the whole area, it should come off easy enough, apply a render, it will dry quick enough, skim and tile.

When tiling use a branded waterproof adhesive, Epoxy is a good bet and a waterproof grouting.

SBR it (which you would want to do anyway)

Once the SBR is dry, the plaster will go on.

As to what the wall does behind is another matter, and one for your choosing, but, so far as the plaster goes, once the SBR is dry, the plaster will go on fine.

I clearing up a leak at home now - cold feed water pipe into washing machine - long term leak - calcified on outside of pipe - been leaking a long while - not allot - but drip by drip over a long while.

Got washer out - fixed leak. Got my aging EBAC dehumidifier going in the gap.

Missus moaning - no room with her washing machine pulled out to walk past it and I just left it and my "aging rusty robot dryer is noisey".

I just keep handing her - cans of water out of the dehumidifier and telling her to put it in the steam iron thing she got...

if it was mine id strip the plaster back to brick and use tanking slurry and sbr bonding agent to damp proof it then the backer board rather than just boarding over and it go moldy and still damp behind . depends on how far you want to go and spend

dont want to go over board im thinking knocking off plaster let dry ( not a rush job its a place i work for tennet moved out but did not even say about it

i went in pointed out xyz repairs was told take as long as it needs to done right i dont want to do the job and have to redo in 6 months time it looks bad (it would have been nice if i found a leaking pipe behind the tiles at least i know where the leak was from but as its damp all over not so easy but looks like shower enclosure was just leaking

but dont do overboard (i normaly over the top everry thing) but is not cost effective and i do need to step it back a bit its a rented and in a few years might still look shiny new or if the next lot go in there dont clean when they leave we might have to refurb again so as much as to make dry that can be retiled and will last for 10 years if looked after
(i done my bathroom 13 years ago standard plaster board masticed in the bath 10 quid a meter tiles good grout and still works looks good (cleaned well)but its time for a change and spend a bit more on it

just hack back plaster back leave to dry as much as possible then and give the bricks a few coats of sbr .it should hold any damp back then board
