Driving me nuts....

Thought I would do a quick shock change on the Golf this afternoon. Wrong!

First nut, looked a bit rusty so cleaned up the threads and got my breaker bar on it. No good withe me standing and bouncing on the braker bar. Not a budge.

Next the breaker extension.

Nope.

Felt like something was going to let go in a bad way, but still no movement from the nut.

Heat, that'll do it.

Made no difference.

Right where is my nut splitter, couldn't find it so......

Still wouldn't come off, so more heat, no good.

I then realised it was a top hat nut, not a washer, so ground through that too.

Still won't budge so gave up for the day. Tomorrow I plan to get new blades for the sawsall and cut down through the bolts either side of the shock.

Slightly concerned about the state of the subframe by the time I've got this done.

Can you access to drill directly into the end of the bolt, either end? That usually does the trick. Use progressively bigger drill size until something gives.

When you had the torch on it, should have simply hit the blow lever and got on with it.

I would have taken a hacksaw and cut the nut down the bolt thread. Do that carefully both sides and the nut falls off, hopefully without damaging the bolt thread.

Also be sure that the nut isnt made on it and you have to screw the bolt.

You sure its not a captive nut? Did you try to undo the bolt?

The bolt access was limited so didn't get the breaker on it. However I just found out it is a CAPTIVE NUT.

I'll grind it off tomorrow and weld on a new one.

This captive nut thing on suspension arms seems quite widespread these days, both my last 2 cars (current, Ford derived, and previous Jags) have had them pretty much everywhere on the rear suspension. Caught me out a couple of times.

Don't agree. I get why it appears that way, but look a little closer. Follow that lower thread closest to the nut and it disappears into the nut by the top.
