Drilling thick steel battery drill

The bottom part already had a 14mm hole so I couldn't drill a smaller hole first. Tried to use my mag drill upside down. No chance! Too heavy to line up.
Then I had a cunning plan.
And it worked like a charm. A bolt through the eye of the scissor jack. Amazing amount of feel. 14mm drill bit biting like a good un

you was lucky that the drill bit didnt grab as it normally does then rips the drill out of your hand

Ever seen the old ratchet site drills that steel erectors used in olden days? Similar to fizzys cunning-ness .

You are spot on. I was expecting it. But it didn't snatch once. Not even breaking through.

Yes, I've used similar, or something as a lever to do the same.

If I was going to drill a pilot hole, I'd use the not quite 14mm drill bit through the first bit with the hole in, to create a good dimple in the second bit - then just use that to centre the pilot.

And yes, use lube, which I'm guessing is the tin of tuti in the back ground?

The 14mm hole was already there from ages ago. Yes CT90. I normally use soluble oil as a flood but not when I am under it

A lot of my old, genuine Starretts have two figures stamped, metric and imperial, say 16mm & 5/8". Never bothered which it really is but then I'm a rough bugger. It's been a 14mm hole, bit of cold galv and an M12 bolt for 40 years.

I'm surprised you couldn't have just put the teeth of the hole saw at the start of the existing hole and skimmed off the undersized bit. Guessing the hole saw was 9/16" which is what, 14.3mm?

Had to drill some 17mm holes years ago in the flange of an RSJ, this for 16mm bolts. I presume we went 17mm as 18 wasn't available. First time of using the Starrett, 300mm long extension bars. That was fun as we were doing it up in the Gods.

The Fabricator in work uses the Mag Drill, but clamps it down on the foot just behind the drill head with a Bessey type sliding Welding Clamp to secure the mag Drill.
(In fact HD adds the Clamp nearly all the time when drilling 20+mm holes in thick plate - as he's had the Mag Drill grab and spin off a couple of times - the Clamp seems to prevent that).
I was helping out drilling a load of plates for him this week as he's buried in work - I took his advice & clamped it & the workpiece to a large piece of RSJ

I was gobsmacked by how much two of these Chinesium bits did in 5mm stainless. They're still good! Sometimes "cheap" works out.

I had an erbauer lying around as well. Says 14mm but actually 9/16 as you say.
If there hadn't already been a 14mm hole in the bottom bracket I would have been fine.

Blacksmiths drill?its a 14mm strait shank drill and the chuck is a half inch . blacksmiths drills are larger than half inch and have reduces shanks to fit the chuck
