My preferred method where possible is to cut a slot across the stud with a 1mm disc or hacksaw and get some heat into the tapped bit and then wind the broken stud out with a screwdriver.

Hot droplets of metal down my sleeve would probable feature in my future were I to try and weld it.
duct taping your sleeves at the wrist can helpThanks for the advice. The stud broke as I tried to remove it with a stud extractor, there is limited access, it is an XJS vee twelve.
I can use the extra holes Jaguar tapped in the manifold and rotate the locking collars. Then the brackets for the heat shield will be in the wrong place.
I will try drilling in preference to welding, when I tried a drill on a piece of the broken stud it seemed unwilling to cooperate.
Hence the question, I was hoping for a magic drill bit.
With better access I would probably try welding. As it stands I will have to introduce the drill from above and then reach up and operate it from under the car.
Hot droplets of metal down my sleeve would probable feature in my future were I to try and weld it.
If this fails I will have to make new brackets, just trying to keep it standard.
Regards Kels.
I wish i had your luck mate![]()
