Drill stand recommendations

I'm looking for a drill stand (not pillar drill) for my workshop. A Google search throws up so much choice and a wide range of prices. Big enough to accommodate up to 100mm box section. I'm will to spend up to £120ish for something accurate and reliable. I trust the comments on this forum more than certain online sellers.

I know you have discounted pillar drills but what size holes are you planning to drill in steel?

Is it for converting a hand drill into a drill press? I'm sure you could get a drill press for that price (£120)

If you want a cheapy on i have one knocking about you can have, (it's like the silverline one)

Thank you for the offer, however it is a drill stand for converting a drill into a drill press that I'm after. I've read the reviews for the cheaper drill presses and am not impressed. Also, with a drill stand I can upgrade the drill when the time comes. Workshop is also limited for space.

even the cheap drill presses will perform better than a drill stand, while the cheap drill presses are arn't the most rigid of machines, I can remember trying to use a drill stand in years gone by and seeing it flex as you try and use it. also speed control will generally be better with a drill press and you will get improved torque at slower speeds due to the belt drive. I was using a small 5 speed clarke drill press for 20 years, and that had a footprint small enough to fit a 400mm deep workbench

the drill press i git 2nd hand off ebay quite cheap and id good runs 500-3000 rpm the drill stand was given to me, but as i had the press already i've never used it, but i suspect it will be no where near the performance of the old drill press.

the press has a huge motor compared to a hand drill and for steel i suspect a drill/stand combination will be a bit too fast.

I have used a drill stand/hand drill combo and they are useless. Even the cheapest bench drill is much more accurate.
£120 will buy you a good used bench drill

Swap the motor for a single phase & you would have something a million times better than what you are suggesting.
Keep an eye on gumtree & you should pick up something cheaper.
