Drill press motor trips rcd

I have a Power Craft 500 watt drill press (from Aldi) that immediately trips the RCD in the consumer unit when I attempt to switch it on.

I took the motor apart to look at it but couldn't see anything wrong with it,it looks like new,is dry,and has hardly been used but is about 5 years old.

While I'd got the motor on the bench I connected it up directly and it still trips the RCD,but with the earth disconnected it runs fine (I have no intention of attempting to use the motor unearthed).

Why does it trip the RCD?Can it be fixed or do I need a new motor?

Leakage to earth. There may be a bit of stray wire touching the case, but it could be faulty insulation on the windings. If you can't see anything obvious I'd change the motor, a rewind wouldn't be economical.

Thanks for the reply - a quick look on Ebay suggests that it'd be cheaper to get a new drill press than to buy a replacement motor.

Hello Mickj,

you've nothing to lose by putting the stator in your oven at a low ish heat (120) for an hour or two. Two chances?

I'd take the back off the motor and check the routing of the stator wires from the connection board first. Perhaps one of them has been pinched somewhere.

Thanks for the tip,but I took it all apart & nothing appears out of place.

Has the trip been over sensitized, for the price of a new one its worth a punt. I am no electrician but have seen this happen
