Drill press issues

Hi

I have a 1hp drill press that is getting outperformed by a hand drill with same drill bit.. it seems to bog down really easily and is gutless...Struggled with a 5mm but in 3mm steel...hand drill through it easily....

The only thing I can think of is that the pulley belts to adjust rpm are worn and may be slipping?

Just wondering if any of your guys have any ideas?

Are you sure it 1 hp.

Your run capacitor could be going. (if it has one)

Yeah it’s a big floor standing model although it’s Chinese so may not be 1hp lol...But it’s sold at the retailer as 1hp.

Motor will likely have a box screwed to the side. Take this off and see how many capacitors are in there.

They are just on spade connections and easily available if it needs replacing.

I thought a capacitor is related to starting...but is a faulty capacitor restrict the current flowing to the motor thus limiting power?

Is there a way to tell if the run capacitor is faulty or is it just trial and error by replacing them and see what happens.

Be careful , capacitors store an electrical charge , many of the larger ones contain enough electricity to make a big enough spark to burn a hole in your finger . So when you disconnect it turn the power off and use an electrically insulated shorting wire that is securely earthed first then put it on the capacitors wire at the termination .. ..if it is OK it will give a loud crack as it discharges through the air on to the earth wire.

My money would be on adjustment. How old is the drill and what sort of use had it had? Enough work to have stretched the belts beyond the limits of the available adjustments?

Belts slipping. Have you tensioned them at all?

How much play / how tight should the belts be when fully tensioned as I reckon mine is too loose- I can pinch the two sides of one belt together.

Tighter than that!

Don't need to be able to twang them but probably so you have 1/2" of movement when in pressing on on one side. Too tight and your bearings will not enjoy it.

Tighten them just enough so if you hold the motor ( unplugged ) pulley you cannot rotate the chuck once the chuck has been tightened up with the chuck key . If it still slips when you have taken up all adjustment it's new belts .

Try " Bearing boy's " they have a nifty measuring /belt selection chart on their website.

I used to charge them up with the megger years ago then give someone a prod with it that was before tasers were invented had a few belts of motors when working on them on farms

belts usually wear / bed in very quickly, re-tension then they are good for years...

Had a pal at school 1965 who took a charged capacitor out a TV it made a hell of a mess of his left index finger were it discharged .

Always this rule of thumb to tension a belt, whether a fan belt, timing belt or drive belt on a machine & its always worked.

When it's tight enough you should just be able to twist the belt through 90 deg half way along the longest stretch.
