Drill bit stuck in (open) keyless chuck.

I have one of those electric drills with the keyless chuck, and the 5.5mm drill bit is stuck in the bottom of the chuck somehow. The actual chuck opens and closes freely so I am not unsure what is trapping the bit. I have tried grabbing the bit with pliers. I have not tried heat on it. Any suggestions?

Possibley lost the L/H securing bolt that stops the chuck unscrewing in reverse, I think the drill has maybe gone down into the threaded hole that this L/H bolt should be in. So in effect this hole is in the middle of the chuck right down the bottom, visable when the chuck jaws are open and not obstructed with a jammed drill. Bit of gentle persuasion but be carefull not to snap the HSS drill. otherwise even more problems. I have put the twist drill in a vice with just clearence to get a screwdriver to prise the chuck up to release the twist drill out of the hols. I wouldnt use Heat.

Had similar before, I put the twist drill in the vice and tapped the end of the jaw with a block of wood, came off easily but make sure someone is there to catch the drill.

I've had similar on a really cheap cordless drill. The chuck on that one was held on with a left hand thread bolt with a Pozidrive head. The bit had got wedged into the middle of the Pozidrive indentation. As others have done, I clamped the bit in a vice, then gave the body of the drill a whack with a block of wood to push the drill off the bit.

Just come back on to say thank you. I put the drill in the vice pointing downwards leaving a small gap between the chuck and the top of the jaws. Got a screwdriver in and gently levered the drill upwards and the drill bit came free. Thanks guys.

the problem you will have as per my post on another topic, small drills will pass all the way into the chuck but the thread will be damaged and you will have problems getting it back in without you run a tap down it

My corded drill have had that screw missing and was a pain coz a 5mm drill would fit in the thread screw its self in and be jammed solid, damaging the thread so that i couldnt put another screw in, but then worse any 4mm down drills would dissppear right up inside, when pushing hard.
