drill bed

got a bench mounted drill press and want to put longer bed on it.
its got the rd one on that it came with, but had to drill a few heads lately and need it longer to hold them properly.
got some half inch by inch strips at work was thinking of welding them to pce of 6"x6" by1/2" plate which can have tube welded to it to fit where exsisting table fits.
going to make outer frame by welding strips side on .
will it be safe to use or is bed that comes with it only that size for reason?

Table limits will be based on column and casting strength,and how well it is is fixed down etc,if making an oversized table,you could always add "jacks" from the drill table to the base ,i used to use scissor or bottle jacks to support the drill table on a crap screwfix pillar drill I had to start off with......a lot depends on the quality of the drill though ......any pics?
