drill all drill bits

So im sat having my breakfast watching ideal world, and seeing these "amazing" drill bits. Theyve just jammed a bit into a bench grinder with no ill effects. Now, with my experience of things that are too good to be true, it tends to be crap. Any one tried these?

my father has some of the 3 in 1 bits that claim to drill through steel masonry and wood, seem ok, need a much slower speed on steel than with a normal hss bit though. masonry gives good enough results too but no quite the same standard as the proper masonry bits.

the thing that concerns me is if the grinder didn't mark them, how brittle are they going to be, and what happens if you ever need to sharpen one.

There only masonry bits ground different there sharper

I only use the Bosch Multibits on masonary now (the blue ones). They are excellent on masonry and OK on wood but they do get hot. Only tried them on steel once to enlarge an existing hole and the tip burnt out so haven't tried since as I normally have a good stock of sharp HSS bits to hand.

the problem wiith them is when cutting holes through steel they can bite on break through and snap the tips off

I bought a couple of sets of frhie "spelling"after seeing an actual demo, never tried them on other materials, Only bring them out if HSS drills won't touch the steel I want drilling. Found them to be absolutely excellent. A little slower speed and quite a bit more pressure,they get dull red sometimes but cutting edge remains good,If you notice on Ideal World he holds the "normal" drills square on to the stone and uses a lot of pressure, the Drill all bit is held to match it's cutting edge and a lot less pressure,

I used one of the Bosch Blue drills while building a mezzanine floor in my unit a few years ago. It was a 10 mm and went through the RSJ like butter. Then a few months ago I needed a 6mm one to do a lot of holes through a piece of angle iron and then through wood in one process.

After about 10 holes the bit tip snapped and I took it back for replacement. Not used the new one yet.......

So one good and one bad experience.

Hi all I have used bosch blue they are good but as said they will chip the cutting edges on metal or snap if too fast. Irwin make some called multiconstruction bits and they are just as good as the bosch ones. Tend to use the irwin ones at the moment they do the job well, did have a faulty batch though not so long ago where they wouldn't cut anything without snapping the cutting face, sent them back and irwin replaced them all for free no questions asked!

I still think they are a compromise and not as good as a specific bit designed for the purpose of drilling a particular material.

Good quality HSS bits for steel and Hilti 4 point SDS bits for masonry.

i made the mistake of buying some cheap 4 point bits for masonry, turned them into round and blunt bits on some poured concrete. spent a bit extra and got some decent bits and they make short work of anything

The 4 point bits fly through rebar at an amazing speed. If they loose a point through normal use, Hilti replace them FOC.
