Dremel type tool -what to buy?

After some years of (occasional) use, my Dremel has developed a fault (probably with the electronic speed control) where it is difficult to get it started, after which it runs OK. My Dremel is the type with a digital speed readout on the rear of the tool.

Looking at the Dremel stuff available now, most of them either seem to be cordless or have some weird collet locking arrangement instead of a plain collet locknut or chuck mounting. I am just looking for a corded tool with speed control up to about 25,000 RPM.

I would welcome you chaps' experiences with Dremel or other similar tools as I am struggling to choose a replacement at the moment.

I have the Bosch professional and it's brilliant but it's cordless the batteries do last ages though

I have a Bosch corded one, but the collet is smaller than the Dremel's so the tools don't fit - something to watch out for.

Make sure what you get for your money £100 only buys the hand set, £155+ with battery 's & charger

buy a second hand dremel 395.
metal gears, and a much more robust speed controller, a powerful motor, and easily fixable (parts available)

they're usually about 15-30 quid, so buy 4 of them for your £100.
mine gets used regularly by me and the kids and it's lasted 5 years+ (I bought it second hand) so 4 of them should last a couple of lifetimes.

I suppose it depends on how hard a life you intend giving it.

I bought one of the Aldi variable speed offerings when they were in the sale at £9.99, in fact I bought two accepting they are cheap and cheerful and probably won't last as good as major brands.

Still using the first one and it's done a lot of work, actually found the receipt the other day whilst browsing and it's out of it's three year warranty so no complaints from me.

Funnily enough this week I just bought a collet for my bosch die grinder which normally takes 6 or 8mm collet but I found a Bosch original 1/8" that fits my GGS 28C. So happy days I can now fit Dremel mandrel in it.

Big difference is though the Bosch die grinder is vibration free and will outlast a Dremel by many factors. Noise difference in use is massive. Way more power with the die grinder and way quieter with overload + kickback protection too.

Don't think I will be getting a Dremel in a hurry again.

I've got a Makita GDO 600 240V die grinder along with straight and angle air die grinders here. hey're all great tools, but when space is tight and/or you're doing real delicate stuff, a Dremel type tool is often the best tool for the job.

Thanks to all for the suggestions so far, one of the things I would be keen on if I don't buy an actual Dremel is whether the collets etc. from my existing Dremel will fit. Sounds like a no for the Bosch.

Dremel tools need a 1/8" or 3mm collet.
I'd be surprised if you couldn't get a collet to fit that size - it is ubiquitous.
