Draper helmet

I recently purchased a Draper helmet used it at the most for five hours welding. Put it on today and to my surprise the headstrap cracked and the helmet fell off.
Examination showed that the strap is made from a cheap brittle plastic. I suppose I could take it back but I have lost the receipt.

Made up a new piece of stap and pop rivetted it on. Any one buying a new helmet , I suggest you check the quality of the plastic and keep your receipt.

I guess you get what you pay for, I would take it back, say you lost the reciept and perhaps upgrade to a better helmet.

I am extremely embarrassed A second look at the box the helmet arrived in shows it not to be a Draper helmet.

It is an SIP Meteor 2150 with the words trade level on the box. I seem to recall it cost just under fifty pounds.

I repaired it because I wanted to use it immediately to finish welding the wing I was working on.

Either way still get in touch with the place you bought it from, you'd expect a fifty quid helment to last longer than a few days. They should by right give you a replacement

Pleased you came back and said that it wasn't a Draper, lots of people wouldn't want to admit they made a mistake.

Personally, I'm very pleased with my Draper auto darkening helmet and have done more than 5 hours with it taking it on and off repeatedly, wedging my head into tight spaces doing wheelarches and sills etc..

For the price I think the Draper is great. I went for it over other brands because it takes 2 AAA batteries instead of the more common button cell batteries which can be impossible to replace when they eventually die.

I also find the Draper to be very comfortable. Only slight criticism I have of my Draper is inside the garage it can be a little dark when not welding, to get around this problem I use a desk lamp with an eco CFL bulb pointed where I'm welding as this makes it easy to see whilst getting ready to weld and being a CFL it doesn't trigger the helmet.

I bought a draper one too. £45 from Amazon. It doesn't quite get as light as I'd like when not welding, as above, but not having used other brands, I wasn't sure if it was normal.

I'd echo all of the comments from schnappi above. Using a lead light to provide a bit more visibility.
