Dragging brakes

Have what appears to be a sticky brake caliper on my wife's vw Tiguan. 2013, 132000 miles. Took the offending caliper off yesterday, cleaned and greased the slide pins and moved the piston in and out several times. Thought that would have cured it but apparently not. Any ideas? Maybe try again moving the piston and lubricating it with brake fluid?
Flexible brake hose degrading internally? Had that happen on a Peugeot years ago. Any suggestions welcome.

Yes front caliper. Area where pads sit wire brushed and smear of copperslip grease applied, as were the caliper slide pins (I know red rubber grease is a better option). Piston seal looked OK, will have another closer look this evening.

Try undoing the bleed screw to see if it's fluid pressure making it bind.

cheap pads ?

if they are not loose enough they wont throw off

sometimes a quick grind on there edges can do what you need

ive known brake pads to be so tight not much will shift them

Is the piston seal ok. Any holes/cuts & you'll get rust forming below the seal on the piston end making the the piston difficult to retract easily. Had the same on my MX5 & at 132000 miles you might expect the seal to be in need of replacement.

I fitted new quality pads and discs to it about 6 months ago. Haven't given any bother until now but I'll take the paint off the contact points just to be sure. Will try opening the bleed nipple to pressure check. Think I've read that a collapsing hose will allow fluid to flow under pressure of pedal and servo but it doesn't return so easily?

Depends on make, I got one for my Mx5 without too much difficulty

he said he can push the piston back freely , if it was fluid the piston wouldnt push back .

He said he could push the piston back in ok,
But the caliper was off the vehicle,
With the caliper on the vehicle, with the brake binding, crack the bleed nipple, to see if you have hydraulic pressure at the nipple,
If so, as you have suspected, you may have a collapsed/delaminated flexible brake hose !
Its worth a go, to eliminate this cause.

So, another look at it just now. No pressure when opening the bleed nipple. Re the piston, it is moving but I wouldn't say very freely or smoothly. Worked it in and out a few times with a little brake fluid to lubricate it. No real improvement and still dragging when rebuilt. I also scrupulously cleaned the contact faces and filed all paint off the pads where they slide too. Convinced its the caliper now. Rebuild kit is basically same price as a new replacement caliper, also from ebay but not sure of the quality?? Will get price from local motor factors and also from TPS, (my brother's work have an account as they don't deal directly with public anymore).

bung one on from tps and be done with it ,, they are easy to deal with ,, you can strip the old one out after and see whats going on ,, only once in over forty years of being round the motor trade have I ever seen a delaminated hose , even then it was very minor so it was working like a slow release rather than a one way valve , long gone are the days of folk putting vise grips on brake lines ,, or at least I seldom see it ,,
todays tip , if you must use vise grips on rubber hoses , use long nose ones and put two deep sockets over the nose to make them more gentle ,,,

Seems like a plan. My experience with internal delamination of flexi hose was on the rear of a Peugeot 405, rear drum brakes one hose feeding the rear axle if memory serves me right. Both rear brakes dragging and overheating. It was a bit of a head scratcher.

I fitted a £34, eBay, brand new, aluminium, Chinese, n/s/r brake caliper to our Renault Megane last Sunday.
It bolted on, it bleed, it seems to work.
Time will tell

How do I know this
Rather than vise grips on the flexi hose etc,
Place a polythene bag over the master cylinder filler neck, replace the cap, create a vacuum,

Ill give that a go , good idea.

Our Fiesta did same last year, new Pagid hose and rebuilt Pagid caliper and 40 minutes later a £45 repair.

VW prices may be higher, but with brakes new is often best in my experience.

I wouldn't touch chinese calipers. I bought 2 rear for ford. Got into a problem and only got the faulty side fixed. I said other side could wait as it was OK. All good then went on holidays a week later. Pulled on handbrake and it pulled up full. I was raging, I said I'm stupid i should have done both sides, looked underneath and it was the new chinese one. Pure scrap, took them straight back and they gave me trw calipers. I will only fit good brand calipers now. The chinese was a new caliper were as the trw was reconditioned.

You can spend days throwing desktop answers at this sort of problem and someone will eventually be right To add to the list I have had to change an abs unit to solve a similar issue.

Ill give that a go , good idea.

It wont stop completely, it'll still drip and some bottles aren't suitable. A proper brake pipe clamp is better. I only cover with bag if removing hose and it can't be clamped or if your trying to put an end on a long one under the car.
