Anyway, yeah sorry, telescopes...
I had a passing interest in astronomy when I was about 17, largely because my mate was into it and could never think of a hobby of my own.
We joined the local society and a guy there ran mirror-grinding classes, so I had a crack at a 6.25" (I think, maybe 6.5") while my mate did an 8". He eventually used his student grant to finish his scope, and I built him an electronic speed control for the mount motor, while I gave up on astronomy and my almost-finished mirror (it just needed silvering as I recall) and donated it as a raffle prize.
Forty years on I can still pick out Cassiopaeia, Orion's belt and the Plough... but I stuck at the electronics

Worryingly, she bears a passing resemblance to one of my ex-wives, in that photo.
