Ok, you have a big thick piece of metal to join to another big thick piece of metal. You run a seem down one side everything on max. But its a bit big for full penetration.
Do you pass the job to somebody else, or flip the joint over and repeat the process down the back side?
Had a guy come in on friday with two 2'x4" 6mm(ish) strips he'd bent into large U's, about 100mm radius and at the end he wanted me to weld a U shaped bar made from about 15mm steel to each of the sheet steel (one side not between the sides)
The bracket is for when mooring on the Lancaster canal as they have changed the system (didnt pay very much attention as he is easily excitable about narrow boats and I had work to do) I ran a 75mm bead down both sides of the bar on both sides of the strip.
so is this as I hope over kill, a futile effort as it will be less than twice as strong as a single weld per side or have I weakened the original weld by under pinning it?
the welder was a 160EN on 0.8mm and argoshield light.
I dont think that theres a problem here, risk assessment to my mind is minimal so this is more about future reference ... course when I get the new portamig it will be less of a 'concern'
