Theres no way i was leaving this on the ground to rust away so its now got a new home...ime a sucker for old English machinery and i intend to bring this old meddings back to life...only thing missing is the quill spring,any ideas guys??? and i have a nice little single phase motor for it to replace the 3 phase.Anyway heres a few pics to keep you going

I suspect a quill spring from any similar drill may fit with a bit ingenuity.

They sure are heavy and its this feature i love with old machines,less rattles ect. 4th pic down i have an overhead rolling block and tackle

its a regular clock spring as common to a lot of other drill presses of the period, you can buy new generic replacement ones.
If you search ebay for "drill press quill spring", plenty of options will come up.
If the spring is present but missing the tang, you can heat treat just the end of the spring (I use a blowlamp, it doesnt take much) and bend a new tang into the treated bit. It is supposed to weaken the spring according to lore but worked for me a few times. If you skip the heating step, the tang just breaks off.
Then you assemble slack, and wind it round with a mechanism on the drill somewhere until it retracts gently, and no more, unless you like being thwacked by flying handles the day you let go

Meddings are still in business, I bought a replacement spring for mine from them (not dirt cheap though)

Haven't posted on here in years but was struck by this drill: I have an almost identical one but mine is a Pollard. I'm thinking they must have been made in the same factory...?

The Colchester lathe featuring in this thread too, (mfletch)... coincidence or what? I had a Colchester Mascot which was also almost identical to that one but mine had the inverted Vee bed not a flat bed like that one has. Sorry to say, it went to the scrap man years ago.

Do you have any photo's of yours? That's a style of Pollard I've never seen before.

Never uploaded a pic to this forum, hope this works... I should say: it doesn't say "Pollard" on it anywhere but I was told it was when I bought it donkey's years ago from Electromotion in Leicester. If anybody knows different let me know.
